Ok, I must be an idiot....I finally am down to 5 dogs and then along comes a chihuahua puppy! Now, I decided against keeping a border collie a couple of years ago and after much thought I chose to place a belgian malinois that could have been my next competitive obedience dog. I had a great home for her that was found through a mutual dog trainer. So...I turned down those two so why did I agree to take this chihuahua puppy?????? Well, I guess as I get older and my Australian Shepherds all get older and my car and living quarters get smaller.....the logical answer is....ready for it???? I WANT A POCKET PET!
Ikkus is 7 yrs old now. He is 18 lbs to my 35 to 60 pound aussies. He is cute. He can get in the bed with me. He is a very cute guy who does little dog cute tricks. But....I can't carry him around. So, as one who normally adds a new dog every couple of years it has been 7 yrs now since a new puppy has graced my doorstep and though logically, I shouldn't do it....it just feels right.
Now for the kicker. I have become accustomed to all my dogs being housetrained and basically on my schedule. Am I ready to battle housetraining again? After all...the toy breeds because they have tiny bladders....are more difficult to train. Also with a toy puppy I have to make sure his sugar levels don't drop...was never an issue with an australian shepherd puppy. But...I am always up for a challenge and this little guy will not put much of a dent in my dog food budget and I think he will be fun! Ask me in a week or two after dealing with puppy issues again.
So, I am off on a new adventure. I may even start training him for a performance dog career, we will see...but for now this little 1 lb 3oz eight week old fawn boy will enter the world of Tres Bon Aussies and my main goal will be to make sure he isn't a snack for one of them! Wish me luck!!!!
